What EMI means

EMI stands for equated monthly instalment. It is the same amount you pay every month until the loan is cleared. Early payments are mostly interest. Later ones are mostly the loan itself.

FormulaEMI = Loan x r x (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n - 1)

Pay less interest

A shorter loan or a lower rate cuts the total interest a lot. Paying a little extra when you can also helps.

Questions

How is EMI calculated?

It uses the loan amount, the monthly interest rate (yearly rate divided by 12) and the number of months. This calculator does it for you.

Does this work for a share loan (margin loan)?

Yes, if you repay it in equal monthly amounts. Many share loans only charge interest each quarter, so check your bank's terms.

Why is my bank's EMI slightly different?

Banks may use a different day count or change the rate during the loan. Treat this as a close estimate.
